CCIE Warm-Up: Advice and Learning Labs offers practical advice on CCIE Lab preparation and five mock lab scenarios that teach crucial lessons for the CCIE candidate. The lessons range from basic pointers on configuring frame relay or ISDN to detailed discussions of complex route redistribution. While the book is designed for the popular CCIE Routing and Switching Lab Exam, there is considerable material that would be useful for other CCIE Lab Exams.

In Chapter One, the author offers general advice on preparing for the CCIE Lab exam, including habits to consider adopting, mistakes to avoid, and general principles to consider. In Chapter Two, the author discusses the costs and benefits of various pieces of CCIE practice lab equipment.

Chapters Three through Chapter Seven consist of five practice scenarios of intermediate difficulty, with solution configuration scripts and "plain English" explanations of all tasks requiring explanation. Each scenario involves multiple routing protocols, and four scenarios involve BGP. The labs are intended for CCIE candidates who have already completed numerous simple practice exercises, but who have not yet purchased or become comfortable with advanced commercial lab scenarios that "put it all together." While the lab scenarios in this book are of intermediate difficulty, they teach many subtle and advanced lessons that CCIE candidates historically have learned from advanced commercial lab scenarios or CCIE boot camp classes.

The scenarios heavily emphasize routing issues involving BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, EIGRP, and RIP. They also cover numerous QOS features, as well as matters such as IP Multicast, DLSW+ and IPSEC. The scenarios require less practice lab equipment than most commercial CCIE lab scenarios do, and do not require ATM equipment, Voice equipment, or a second Catalyst 3550-EMI switch.

There is an Appendix with general information about the CCIE program and an Annotated Bibliography consisting mainly of books the author used in preparing for the CCIE Lab.

CCIE Warm Up is not intended to replace advanced commercial labs or CCIE boot camps, but is intended as a "Warm Up" to them, providing a guided transition to a point where the CCIE candidate is better prepared for the more advanced and far-reaching practice scenarios.
